Salford City Football Club ( The Ammies ) is based at the Moor Lane ground in Kersal. The club, founded in 1940, moved into this historic ground in 1978, a location with a sporting legacy which includes horse racing, golf, cricket, rugby union, rugby league, tennis and archery, going back as far as 1681 . I parked outside the Moor Lane entrance although i did notice the main players entrance and car park was nestled amongst built up housing down a side street .
Today's opponents are Bamber Bridge ( Briggers or Brig ) in their familar white shirts/black chest band and away yellow shorts/socks . No problem finding the ground - i decided on the A56 Bury New Road from junction 17 of the M60/M62 . Once inside the ground i was met by a local fan who showed me to the club house and shop whilst filling me in on some of the grounds history . I mentioned how big the pitch looked and the Grandstand which is near the original finish line for the old horse racing course . Purchased the match programme and several more from the club shop while chatting to more locals ; well worth a look , also some great club scarves badges and shirts .
Managed to grab a quick word with Salfords First team coach , Stewart Brown , we agreed both teams are having a similar season , mid-table , odds on a draw ? 'Watch out for Ryan Salmon , ' i said tongue in cheek , ' Oh we will ' Stewart laughed , probably thinking of his own Salmon , Gavin . Enjoyed listening to the alternative pre-match music , especially the Buzzcocks and the Colin Murray soundalike PA announcer . Well it is Salford and there's no escaping the tones of the Northern pop culture .
Both sides settled quickly , first chance to City followed by several for Brig .
Didn't take long for the Ammies to find their villain of the peace , Ryan Salmon : after making several decent runs and opportunities , Brigs number 9 went in the book for persistent fouls , not before time according to the home fans and players .
Brig were looking more likely to score and on 43 minutes Alistair Waddecar fired home capitalising on an error by the city defence . Didn't expect City to find an equaliser before half-time but Gavin Salmon produced a screamer from the edge of the box to send both teams in equal at the break .
Match Action Ryan Salmon receives the yellow card ! Ammies celebrate
Early in the second half Brig are reduced to ten men when Ryan salmon is given his marching orders for a back heel stamp on Safords number 4 Hockenhull .
The Ammies are glad to see the back of salmon who catches an early bath !
This didn't effect Bridge's play too much and amazingly they had a clear cut chance soon after but the opportunity was blazed over from the edge of the penalty box .
City began to find more openings and eventually made it 2-1 when Jamie Baguley fired home . Looked as though Salford had gained the upper hand but Brig continued to press forward and were awarded a spot kick after a trip in the box . Chris Howarth saved easily to his left but the impressive Waddecar reacted first and netted the rebound .
Both sides had opportunities to win the game but Bamber Bridge will be delighted with their performance especially after going down to ten men . Their manager and fans must be so frustrated with Salmon who 's got tremendous pace and ability but far too often committed petty fouls when there's no need particularly in full view of the referee .
Match officials 8/10 - got the sending off and penalty correct , generally good .
Good atmosphere and banter created by the Ammies on an extremely biting cold afternoon . Well worth the trip .
